Jason Kahn and Jon Mueller
Jason Kahn and Jon Mueller work with a variety of acoustic percussion and electronics to create a range of sound and frequencies that fill a space and offer a different experience based on that specific space. A lot of Jon Mueller's range comes from gongs and gong recordings, which provide a large frequency spectrum. For Jason Kahn, the analog synth interjects a whole other range of sounds outside of the gong frequencies. Together, particularly at higher volumes, it becomes difficult from a listening standpoint to determine "what is what."
By subjecting audiences to the inhalation of desensitizing fumes derived from the quintessence of drumming, Jason Kahn and Jon Mueller have amassed a number of stunning releases over the years, many of them worthy of inclusion in the pantheon of Static Music with a Brain (theirs - ours is usually pretty much anesthetized by the results).
Paris Transatlantic May 2010
At its peak this music is intense to the point of being outright disorientating, yet for all the lack of harmony and the towering coarseness of texture exhibited here, you couldn't quite call this noise music: there's something altogether more studious and level-headed about this work
Boomkat
Deeply intelligent, nuanced and free-thinking individuals, their collaborations are well worth seeking out. It is always necessary for me to retune my ears listening to their work; they place, whether always by intention or happy accident, much of the beauty of their sound work deep within the white and pink squalls they kick up. Two percussionists restlessly engaged in the possibilities of noise.
