Haptic
Haptic is the Chicago trio of Steven Hess (Pan American, Dropp Ensemble, On, Ural Umbo), Joseph Clayton Mills (Jonathan Chen,
Dropp Ensemble), and Adam Sonderberg (Dropp Ensemble, Civil War). Begun in 2005 as a live band, Haptic frequently rotates a
different fourth member into performances.
Haptic conceived a combination of materials, featuring a commanding mixture of looping sub-basses and metallic caress, slowly
evolving into an isolationist riverside from which one can observe dispersed detritus floating over dark currents.
Touching Extremes
So much is going on deep within the music's viscous layers. Like years of weather-worn layers of torn posters on disused urban buildings little glimpses of colour shine through the broken surfaces. Little bits of other messages are glimpsed, sometimes fragments that stand apart from everything we hear above them, sometimes just elements that blend in.
The Watchful Ear October 9, 2009
Haptic have been performing together since 2005, long enough to give the group a solid intuition about each other. Their music is more
electro-acoustic improvisation than the drone's gentler ambient cousins. Individual contributions blend into a slowly evolving texture, combining deep resonances with subtle, chaotic percussion, with just enough references to focus attention through the rich, simmering background.
