Haptic
|
|
| |
|
Haptic is the Chicago trio of Steven Hess (Pan American, Dropp Ensemble, On, Fessenden), Joseph Clayton Mills (Jonathan Chen, Dropp Ensemble), and Adam Sonderberg (Dropp Ensemble, Civil War). Begun in 2005 as a live band, Haptic frequently rotates a different fourth member into performances. As Touching Extremes noted: "Haptic conceived a combination of materials, featuring a commanding
mixture of looping sub-basses and metallic caress, slowly evolving into
an isolationist riverside from which one can observe dispersed detritus
floating over dark currents."

'"...prime rib dark, rich drone music..." '
- Paris Transatlantic
|
| |
'Chicago's Haptic are often mistaken for drone musicians. Certainly sustained sounds, mostly of either electronic or percussive origin, are integral to their approach... The accumulation of events reveals the depth, not breadth, of sound to be the trio's paramount concern... there's something refreshingly concrete about Haptic's rougher surfaces.'
- Bill Meyer, The Wire February 2009

'The Medium finds Haptic members Steven Hess (Pan American, Fessenden, Dropp Ensemble), Joseph Clayton Mills (Jonathan Chen, Dropp Ensemble), and Adam Sonderberg (Dropp Ensemble, Civil War) revealing themselves to be more alchemists than musicians (the trio is abetted by contributions from Boris Hauf, Olivia Block, and Tony Buck). The two pieces, each approximately twenty minutes in length, are molasses-thick, slowly-mutating drones of spellbinding character...'
